The Gift of Shabbat

No challah tonight, but you know what? Shabbat isn’t about Challah. I mean, don’t get me wrong. We LOVE Challah and I intend to have some for next week. Traditions are nice. Challah. Candles. Blessings. They are all beautiful, but they all point to something greater…to the One who gave us Shabbat as a gift from the beginning of time.

He created and fashioned in 6 days and then took a break. He made that 7th day “holy” and gave it to us as an example. We can explain days, months, seasons, years. But there is nothing to explain the week…the world-wide observance of the week…outside of the bible. It started with creation and went out into all other cultures. Sure, there are a few here and there who have tried other systems than a 7 day week, but few and far between. The overwhelming majority of the world uses a 7 day week and has for as long back as people can remember.

So, think about it. What will YOU do with the gift of Shabbat?
