I think it is past time that we, as a people and a nation, really do some inner soul-searching. So many are asking how this could happen. Perhaps, that is not the right question. Maybe a better question is “how could this not?” Or even, why has this not happened more often?
Before you get angry with me or think me heartless, consider the following. First answer these questions for yourself. Then answer them for your family, your friends, your community and for the world at large.
What is the focus of your heart and mind? What do you feed your spirit and soul? Is it junk? Is it healthy? Is it positive? Is it negative? Whatever we focus on will change us…for better or for worse. It will bring healing or it will bring damage. It will affect how we react to the world and to others. But there is even more to consider.
The evidence is all around us for a Creator. There is simply too much irreducible complexity for this world…this universe…to be here by chance. And that raises more questions.
What are you doing with that reality? Shouldn’t we be trying to get to know that Creator? Shouldn’t we be asking why that Creator made everything? Shouldn’t we be asking what that Creator wants of us…what our purpose is? Shouldn’t we be checking in to see how we are supposed to live in light of the fact that we are not our own, but are created beings in a created world?
There is more to this life than what we are seeing right in front of us. The real substance of life lies in a spiritual realm. And the One who knows the most about that spiritual realm is the Spirit that created it all.
We ignore that spiritual realm to our peril. Take the Creator out of the equation and life is cheap. If we are here by accident, then we have no real value…no purpose. We have no real history to learn from and no real future to anticipate. We are just cosmic accidents and this life is all there is. Everything that happens is one big accident and control is just an illusion. It is survival of the fittest, the strongest, the mightiest. Some could say that is what we saw in Colorado. The shooter was stronger and mightier than all the rest. Of course, we know that isn’t true…or do we?
It is time that we take a serious look at our beliefs. If we truly believe in evolution and that we are merely accidents, then who sets the moral standards for society? Who decides what is good and what is bad? What is pure and what is evil? What is moral and what is immoral?
I know. We could just say that we all decide together. Well, that’s fine. But what about when society as a whole decides that something like cannibalism is OK? There are ethnic groups who have done just that! Or what about when killing someone is to the norm. There are ethnic groups that have done that, too…like the Waorani tribe in South America. How about old men marrying very young girls, even under the age of 10? Welcome to Islam! Or how about a society deciding that the removal of another society is A-OK. Welcome to genocide…something we see in way too many countries around the world! If we are accidents, life is cheap. Who cares if we kill our unborn, our elderly or our disabled? It is survival of the fittest, right?
Look around you. The Creator has given us evidence of His existence in His creation. There is too much precision, too many things that simply could not be co-incidental. He has also made Himself known by appearing to a particular people group and giving His (very much misunderstood) words. He even came down in human form as our Messiah so that we could experience Him in an even deeper way.
I pray you will seek the Creator and find your true purpose in this life. Don’t waste your time and energy on anything less. Seek with all your heart, all your mind, all your soul and all your strength. Seek until you know Him. If we all do that, this country can be turned around. If we don’t, we will continue down the path we have chosen and we will see more and more of incidents like these.
(By the way, don’t think for a minute that the powers that be won’t use this as an “excuse” to push for greater gun control. Just remember, law-abiding citizens don’t typically kill people and you have never heard of a massacre at a gun range. Criminals don’t believe in obeying the law, so the only thing “gun control” will do is disarm the law-abiding protectors and leave us all as easy targets. Remember the saying, “when guns are illegal only criminals will have guns.”)
