I don’t believe that courtship is necessarily bad, but a lot depends upon how you define it and who is in control of it. I have no idea with a girl seeking the counsel, wisdom and advice of her parents to help her make sure she is making a good choice in a spouse. I think that is just plain smart. The same goes for the guy with his parents.
In today’s Western world and culture you don’t typically see courtships happening. The ones that do happen cover a pretty wide variety of ways in which they are carried out. I would dare to say that quite a few are just fine. However, there is a darker side to courtship that is becoming more and more prevalent amongst certain groups of people. It is that kind of courtship about which I am concerned.
There is a claim that this group’s method of courtship is biblical. Yet, is it really? Someone I have met online, Eric Pazdziora, has a very good article on the subject. He writes about what some groups are doing and explores what the bible really has to say about it in “Bondage of Betrothal”. In his typically unique style, he opens up the subject for us in a very compassionate manner.
You can find his article on the Quivering Daughters blog where Hillary McFarland writes for, and ministers to, those women who were, and are being, raised in the what has been dubbed the patriocentric movement (not to be confused with the true biblical patriarchy they claim to be following). For more on Hillary check out this review I did of her book, also titled Quivering Daughters.
